Winners Announcement

NIST is pleased to announce that the team consisting of Official Representative Dr. Tianxing Chu of Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and Team Leader Professor Ruizhi Chen of Wuhan University, China won the PerfLoc Prize Competition for development of smartphone indoor localization apps. The other members of the team were Haojun Ai, Guangyi Guo, Jian Kuang, Xiaoji Niu, Xuesheng Peng, Xingyu Zheng, and Ge Zhu from Wuhan University.
The team was awarded the top cash prize of $20,000. NIST will sponsor the team's travel to the 9th International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (2018 IPIN), to be held in Nantes, France, September 24-27, 2018, so that they can participate in the 2018 IPIN Indoor Localization Competition to showcase their app.
PerfLoc was very challenging: a total of 152 teams registered on the PerfLoc website, but only 16 teams uploaded location estimates on the website. The PerfLoc Competition Leaderboard shows the rankings of the top 10 teams at the conclusion of the Competition Testing Period on January 17, 2018. Subsequently and according to the PerfLoc Competition Rules, NIST invited the top three teams eligible for cash prizes based on the PerfLoc Competition Leaderboard to live test their apps at NIST. These teams included the second, third, and fourth ranked teams on the leaderboard. (The top-ranked team represented by Chenfeng Jing was not eligible to receive cash prizes.) The second and third ranked teams accepted the invitation and traveled to NIST for live testing during Perfloc Finalist App Demo Days on April 26-27, 2018.
The team from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and Wuhan University in China was the only team that managed to go through the suite of tests administered by NIST. The app developed by this team was tested according to eight test & evaluation scenarios in a building with 30,000 square meters of space. The scenarios involved normal walking (with or without occasional pauses), using elevators instead of stairs to change floors in the building, normal walking with instances of leaving and reentering the building that allowed the app to get GPS fixes, transporting an object placed on a push cart, walking backwards, walking sideways, and crawling on the floor. The last three scenarios are the type of activities first responders may engage in when they respond to an emergency in a building. Some of these scenarios lasted more than 20 minutes. Judge Dereck Orr, Director of the Public Safety Communications Research Program, declared this team the winner of the PerfLoc Prize Competition.
