Mission Critical Services (MCX)

Mission Critical Services Logo

The Mission Critical Services (MCX) portfolio concentrates on four areas of communications for first responders: direct mode, mission critical push to talk, Land Mobile Radio (LMR) to Long Term Evolution (LTE), and public safety user quality of experience (QoE).

Mission:

To advance the availability and performance of mission critical services, forge partnerships to expand our sphere of research with well-qualified universities and agencies, and influence the standards community by participating in regular 3GPP and TCCA events.

Vision:

PSCR, through its research and encouragement of exploration in the area of MCX, will be seen as a trustworthy leader by the public safety community as broadband technology becomes ubiquitous.

Featured Project

The MCX Testing Standards Initiative, led by PSCR, is committed to ensuring dependable communication services for public safety professionals. The goal of this project is to foster collaboration among standards development organizations and industry stakeholders to improve interoperability, safety, reliability, and efficiency in mission-critical communication applications. By participation in 3GPP working groups and engagement with the commercial sector, the project created a broadband conformance ecosystem for public safety’s Mission Critical Services (MCPTT, MCData, and MCVideo). The resulting framework is now available for carrier implementation through existing certification mechanisms.

Key milestones for the project include authoring standardized test cases for 3GPP RAN5, enabling the development of MCS technology conformance features for equipment manufacturers through external funding mechanisms, and achieving the first MCPTT application certification in 2024.
