ARTEMIS QUARC - Quality Under Adjustable Realistic Conditions

The GTRI research team will develop a comprehensive suite of software and hardware tools for the simulation, recording, and evaluation of land mobile radio systems, Long Term Evolution (LTE) Systems and Future Technologies with the ability to, at a minimum, concurrently vary four proposed key performance indicators (KPI). Furthermore, GTRI will leverage outcomes to design, develop and validate a model for QoE for public safety users. The GTRI ARTEMIS-QUARC project will integrate with the ARTEMIS (usability testbed for first responders), seamlessly enabling a Virtual Test Facility for the collection of real-time, objective data. - July 2019

Project Overview

GTRI will develop a framework for the evaluation of mission critical voice (MCV) quality of experience (QoE) for first responders operating in real field scenarios. The GTRI research team will develop a comprehensive suite of software and hardware tools for the simulation, recording, and evaluation of LMR  systems, Long Term Evolution (LTE) Systems and Future Technologies with the ability to, at a minimum, concurrently vary the four proposed key performance indicators (KPIs) (Mouth to Ear Latency, Access Time, Link Establishment and Retention, and Speech Intelligibility and Background Audio Quality). By dynamically varying these KPIs, the GTRI team will evaluate QoE for active duty operators and first responders in real operating scenarios by measuring objective and subjective outcomes, recording data in input and output of the system and leveraging new and existing partnerships with local organizations. Furthermore, GTRI will leverage outcomes to design, develop and validate a model for QoE for public safety users.

The GTRI ARTEMIS‐QUARC project will integrate with the ARTEMIS (usability testbed for first responders), seamlessly enabling a Virtual Test Facility for the collection of real‐time, objective data. Simply the ability to integrate changes to audio into the ARTEMIS platform will enhance that platform’s efficacy, but the greater benefit will be the availability of a First‐Responder oriented scenario development and testing platform, incorporating real‐time multimodal sensor data. Test Scenarios developed as a part of the ARTEMIS‐QUARC will serve to enhance the overall ARTEMIS platform, as the development of new immersive scenarios for First  Responders will enhance the applicability of ARTEMIS as a technology testbed. The user interface and heads up display interaction development undertaken in collaboration with first responders for the ARTEMIS project will enhance the realism of the test scenarios, even as the reliability and breadth of data collection available for test scenarios will be expanded on by the needs of both projects.

Potential Impact of the Project
  • Realtime modifications to QoE

  • The completed ARTEMIS‐QUARC system will be capable of testing audio quality impacts across a variety of test environments in real and simulated scenarios

  • Not limited to virtual environments, ARTEMIS‐QUARC will be designed to enable real‐time audio quality simulations, data collection and analysis during mobile field tests

  • ARTEMIS‐QUARC testing will result in the generation of a model capable of correlating audio quality and/or network performance with mission performance
