Electromagnets

SANS Electromagnet installed on an instrument

Four electromagnets are available for use on SANS. Horizontal field magnet 1 (HM1) can achieve up to 1.8 Tesla (forefront of picture) with the magnetic field orthogonal to the neutron beam. HM2 is a smaller version of HM1 and can reach 0.5 T. Due to its small nature, it is used at the BT5 USANS instrument. The Titan magnet, designed for use with polarized beam measurements, can reach fields up to 1.6 T. The little red magnet (LRM) can be oriented so the magnetic field is perpendicular or in the direction of the neutrons and can reach fields of 0.4 T.
