Livestock and Animal Scales

Description and Purpose:

This 3-day seminar will teach students how to properly inspect and test livestock and animal scales, i.e., perform an official examination by properly applying all applicable NIST Handbook 44 requirements, which are outlined in NIST EPO 12. The sessions will include formal lecture, class discussion, group exercises, audio-visual presentations, and some hands-on practice. The focus of this class will be on a variety of mechanical and electronic weighing instruments and include specific topics related to these types of scales such as device suitability; application of tolerances; specialized tests procedures; and installation, maintenance, and use requirements.

Course Info

After this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Correctly APPLY requirements and procedures outlined in NIST EPO 12;
  • UNDERSTAND and CONDUCT official examinations (inspection and tests) using all appropriate NIST Handbook 44 requirements and requirements from the: USDA, Packers & Stockyards Program on livestock and animal scales; and
  • INTERPRET scale test results.

State weights and measures field officials, local enforcement officials, and service agents.

Qualified participants must have a fundamental understanding of weights and measures practices, procedures, and the use of NIST Handbook 44 – Specifications, Tolerances, and Other Requirements for Weighing and Measuring Devices. As a prerequisite to this class, participants are required to complete the NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) “Handbook 44 Self-Study Course.” This self-study course can be found on the NIST OWM website: e-Learning Resources and Training Materials

Unscheduled course requests are periodically reviewed by the instructor. Classes for a course may be scheduled based on the level of participant interest. OWM schedules classes when the minimum number of orders are received.

Metrology seminar attendees are required to provide safety-toed footwear complying with at least the I/C-75 rating of ANSI Z41.1 while working in the training laboratory.

To obtain a course certificate for this class, students must be in attendance for the entire class, participate in all planned group activities, and achieve a score of 70 percent or higher on a final exam, which will be administered on the last day of the class. Students who do not fulfill these requirements will not receive a certificate of completion.
