The U.S. National Work Group (USNWG) on Taximeters completed a major step in the development of regulatory standards when the work group’s proposed changes to NIST Handbook 44 were adopted by the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) in July 2017. The changes included a new separate code that applies to systems now being referred to as Transportation Network Measurement Systems (TNMS). The transportation-for-hire industry continues to evolve, and many providers who have used more traditional devices (taximeters) have now transitioned to the use of location services and software-based meters.
A compilation of all past Taximeters: USNWG meetings summaries may be found here: Archive Meeting Summaries.
The present activities of the Taximeters: USNWG has now been transitioned to a National Council on Weights and Measures (NCWM) Transportation-for-Hire Systems Task Group. The objectives of this Task Group are to combine and harmonize the current language in NIST Handbook 44 with the Transportation Network Measurement System (TNMS) Code and combine the NCWM Publication 14 technical policy, checklists, and test procedures for the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP). NIST OWM Weights and Measures Coordinator John McGuire serves as the NIST Technical Advisor on this task group.
