Tips

SI knowledge and fluency in metric measurements are valuable workforce skill sets which can set personnel apart from others that do not have metric measurement experience. Use these tips when implementing metric training within an organization:

  • Define the learning audience. Determine who within the organization needs to know the metric system and to what extent they need to know it. Some personnel may require an in-depth working knowledge, while others may require less. Many will only need to know a few metric units. Defining the learning audience will minimize training expenses, one of the primary costs of metrication.
  • Train only as needed. Train only as necessary to meet the goal of enabling personnel to perform their jobs with equal or improved efficiency using metric measurements. Training can often be accomplished on-the-job.
  • Train at the right time. Train the metric system immediately prior to when personnel will use the knowledge on-the-job. Training earlier than needed is usually ineffective because there is not an opportunity for workers to effectively apply or practice new metric skills.

Occupational Training Workbooks

This series was developed in the 1970's by the Center for Vocational Education with the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare's Bureau of Occupational and Adult Education to provide useful educational information on length, area, volume, weight, temperature, and unit conversion. The workbooks include learning activities and quizzes that apply metric measurements within a variety of occupations but should be interpreted for today's occupations.
