Standards to Advance the Bioeconomy

Policies supporting standards development

•  Executive Order 14081 on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe and Secure American Bioeconomy identifies the need to "promote standards, establish metrics, and develop systems to grow and assess the state of the bioeconomy."
• The U.S. Department of Commerce-led Bold Goals for U.S. Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing R&D to Further Supply Chain Resilience highlights the need to develop standards, platform technologies and tools to enable interchangeability and interoperability.
• The United States Government National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology (CET) outlines how the U.S. can ensure that standards for CET, including biotechnology, are developed with transparency, openness, impartiality, consensus, effectiveness, relevance, coherence, and with broad participation. 

NIST standards leadership and Engagement

• NIST leads or contributes to a broad range of documentary standards, including the lexicon for bioeconomy.
• NIST leads multiple consortia to cultivate broad stakeholder engagement and input for the development and adoption of consensus standards.
• NIST, as the National Metrology Institute (NMI), represents the U.S. in supporting advances in measurement science and measurement standards with other NMIs under the auspices of BIPM through the Metre Convention of 1875.
• NIST coordinates with other U.S. government and foreign agencies to support policy development and regulatory decision making.
• NIST continuously identifies global standardization needs, gaps and opportunities.
• NIST recently announced a Regenerative Medicine Standards Curricula Development Program to support broad adoption and continuous education in advanced therapy manufacturing.
