Description and Purpose:
This 2-hour webinar offered by the NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) provides a basic introduction to uncertainty calculations and reporting using the 8-step process published in NIST SOP 29 (NISTIR 6969). NOTE: The content is similar to what is covered in the Fundamentals of Metrology seminar and is a useful pre-cursor or review for content covered during the course and includes calculations and an integrated application quiz. The session ends with an optional 30-minute session for Questions and Answers.
As an IACET Accredited Provider, the NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) Training Program offers IACET CEUs for its learning events that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, using SOP 29 and course notes, participants will be able to:
- DEFINE: standard uncertainty, expanded uncertainty, coverage factor, Type A methods, Type B methods;
- DESCRIBE the importance of knowing and evaluating measurement uncertainty;
- Be able to: SPECIFY, IDENTIFY, QUANTIFY, CONVERT, COMBINE, EXPAND, EVALUATE, and REPORT uncertainties for a simple scenario;
- EXPLAIN the concepts of uncertainty and its relationship to metrological traceability;
- IDENTIFY documentation requirements for uncertainty calculations within a calibration laboratory; and
- IMPLEMENT an uncertainty budget based on concepts presented in NISTIR 6969, SOP 29 and the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement.
Audience
Laboratory metrology staff and administrators who are new to uncertainty calculations or who would like to review the 8-step process of SOP 29. The session would also be useful for metrology staff who will be conducting on-the-job-training for new staff members.

- Request an Unscheduled Course – To indicate your interest in an unscheduled course, visit the OWM Contacts System Menu to review “Courses,” select the Course title, and submit your interest. Unscheduled course requests are periodically reviewed by the instructor. Classes for a course may be scheduled based on the level of participant interest. OWM schedules classes when the minimum number of orders are received.

Minimum Requirement(s)
Successful Completion includes completing pre- and post-work assignments, full attendance and participation in the session activities and discussion, including the integrated quiz/calculations.
Technology Requirement(s)
Microsoft Teams requirements:
- Computer. At least a 1.1 GHz, two-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 3GB of hard drive space for basic use. For a better experience, especially with video, a more powerful processor like a 4-core model is recommended.
- Software and Operating System. The operating system must be a supported version of Windows, macOS, or Linux, or a mobile OS like Android or iOS.
- Windows: Windows 11, Windows 10 (excluding LTSC), Windows 10 on ARM, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2012 R2.
- macOS: Check the specific requirements for the version of macOS you are using.
- Linux: Teams for Linux is available as a progressive web app (PWA) and works on supported desktop environments like GNOME or KDE.
- Mobile: Supported on the last four major versions of Android and the last two major versions of iOS.
- Internet Network (Bandwidth): A fast internet connection is recommended for video calls and screen sharing. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 10 mbps up/down per Teams Room. Teams prioritizes audio over video quality.
- Display. Minimum 1024x768 resolution.
- Video camera. USB 2.0.
- Speakers.
- Microphone.
