Software Verification and Validation Part I & II

Description and Purpose:

These two 2-hour sessions on Software Verification and Validation, hosted by the NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM), focus on using Microsoft Excel in calibration laboratories and meeting ISO/IEC 17025:2017 software requirements. Part I will provide guidance and resources for ensuring software quality assurance, documenting evidence of verification and validation, and provide the tools for ongoing software evaluation. Successful completion will require a laboratory assignment and submission of post-work, with Part II including group review and feedback on student validations that are submitted.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, using notes and reference materials, you will be able to:

  • IDENTIFY which criteria in ISO/IEC 17025:2017;
  • EVALUATE your laboratory administrative procedures covering software quality assurance;
  • COMPLETE the Laboratory Software Inventory file;
  • LIST examples of Verification and Validation techniques; and
  • PERFORM and EVALUATE software V&V on a laboratory spreadsheet as 'Post-Work'.
Audience

Laboratory personnel who have responsibilities for designing, validating, and/or improving the Excel spreadsheets used in their laboratory. For application to alternative software programs, contact the instructor before registering. This course is available for non-weights and measures participants.

Pre-Work
  • Read: The GLP-15 for Software Quality Assurance.
  • Submit: Any related procedure(s) that are in place in your laboratory for ‘Software Quality Assurance’.
  • Submit: SOPs Reading Outline based on GLP-15 (URL is above) to the instructor per the instructions.

Pre-Work Deadline: Must be completed prior to the first webinar.

Post-Work
  • Submit the completed Form A (Software Inventory and Software Verification and Validation to the instructors per the instructions.
  • Submit a copy of the spreadsheet that is evaluated; include the procedure if it is not a NIST SOP.
Registration Fee

The current registration fee for webinars is $350 and confirmed participants will be sent payment instructions. Registration fees for State weights and measures metrologists are funded by NIST OWM.

Course Sign-up and Confirmation
  • Identify a Scheduled Class – Review the OWM Training and Events calendar to identify a scheduled class for this course.
  • Request a Scheduled Class  After creating an OWM Contacts System account, request a class in the OWM Contacts System or login to your existing account. View the videos below for detailed instructions.
  • Request an Unscheduled Course – To indicate your interest in an unscheduled course, visit the OWM Contacts System Menu to review “Courses,” select the Course title, and submit your interest. Unscheduled course requests are periodically reviewed by the instructor. Classes for a course may be scheduled based on the level of participant interest. OWM schedules classes when the minimum number of orders are received.

Minimum Requirement(s)

Completion includes completing pre-work assignment, full attendance and participation in the session activities and discussion, submission of course post-work assignments (notes, inventory, spreadsheet and its assessment) and participation in the follow up review session.

Technology Requirement(s)

Microsoft Teams requirements:

  • Computer. At least a 1.1 GHz, two-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 3GB of hard drive space for basic use. For a better experience, especially with video, a more powerful processor like a 4-core model is recommended.
  • Software and Operating System. The operating system must be a supported version of Windows, macOS, or Linux, or a mobile OS like Android or iOS.
  • Windows: Windows 11, Windows 10 (excluding LTSC), Windows 10 on ARM, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • macOS: Check the specific requirements for the version of macOS you are using.
  • Linux: Teams for Linux is available as a progressive web app (PWA) and works on supported desktop environments like GNOME or KDE.
  • Mobile: Supported on the last four major versions of Android and the last two major versions of iOS.
  • Internet Network (Bandwidth): A fast internet connection is recommended for video calls and screen sharing. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 10 mbps up/down per Teams Room. Teams prioritizes audio over video quality.
  • Display. Minimum 1024x768 resolution.
  • Video camera. USB 2.0.
  • Speakers.
  • Microphone.
