We are sad to say goodbye to Dr. Laurie E. Locascio as the 17th Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Under Secretary for Standards and Technology for the U.S. Department of Commerce. As the NIST Director, Dr. Locascio also served as the Honorary President of the National Council on Weights and Measures (NCWM) for the past three years.
Dr. Locascio has been selected as the new president and chief executive officer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that administers and coordinates the U.S. voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system. She will begin her new role at ANSI on January 1, 2025.
During Laurie Locascio’s tenure as NIST Director and NCWM Honorary President, she served as co-signatory to our renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NCWM in August 2023. She also presented two inspiring speeches at the Annual NCWM meetings in August 2023 and July 2024 that highlighted NIST and NCWM’s past collaborations and our bright future together as we take on new and exciting weights and measures challenges.
Effective January 1, 2025, Dr. Charles Romine will serve as Acting NIST Director. We welcome Charles (Chuck) Romine as the Honorary President of NCWM, and he looks forward to connecting with the weights and measures community in his new capacity.
