Martin Berger

Martin Berger received his B.S. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-46 in the Pacific campaign. After the war, he completed his M.S. and finally his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1951. His doctoral thesis was on multiple scattering of fast protons in photographic emulsions. Berger was hired by Ugo Fano in the National Bureau of Standards (NBS, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST) Nuclear Physics Section in 1952. He was promoted to chief of the Radiation Theory Section in 1964.

  • L. H. Gray Medal, International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurement, 2003

Research interests: transport theory for gamma rays, neutrons and charged particles; radiological physics; development of Monte Carlo methods in computational dosimetry
