International and Regional Legal Metrology Organizations

The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML)

The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) was established in 1955 in order to promote the global harmonization of legal metrology procedures. Since that time, the OIML has developed a worldwide technical structure that provides its Members with metrological guidelines for the elaboration of national and regional requirements concerning the manufacture and use of measuring instruments for legal metrology applications. The OIML is a treaty organization whose membership includes Member States, countries that participate in technical activities, and Corresponding Members, Countries that join the OIML as observers.

Regional Organizations

The Asia-Pacific Legal Metrology Forum (APLMF)

The APLMF includes legal metrology authorities in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies and other economies on the Pacific Rim, whose objective is the development of legal metrology and the promotion of free and open trade in the region through the harmonization and removal of technical barriers to trade in the field of legal metrology using OIML Recommendations.

The Inter-American Metrology System (SIM)

SIM is the Regional Metrology Organization for the Americas. The U.S. participates in SIM to promote and support an integrated measurement infrastructure in the Americas to ensure equity in the marketplace, improve the quality of life and facilitate international trade. The ILMG's activities focuses on SIM's Legal Metrology Working Groups on Laws and Regulations and the Metrological Control of Measuring Instruments and Prepackaged Products.
