OWM Recognizes Proficiency Testing Coordinators of the 2024 RMAPs

The Laboratory Metrology program in OWM operates an ISO/IEC 17043 compliant Proficiency Testing (PT) program that assesses the effectiveness of the metrology training efforts for the state laboratory participants and the traceability of the state metrology laboratories to the SI through NIST’s measurement services. Participants of the PT program include federal and commercial laboratories across the U.S., in addition to state legal metrology laboratories.

OWM acknowledges the hard work of the many regional technical experts of the PT program. In particular, OWM is grateful to the PT Coordinators and PT Analysts during this year’s NIST Handbook 143 Annual Regional Measurement Assurance Program (RMAP) meetings from March 2024 to September 2024. The role of the PT Coordinator is highly important, as the metrologist is responsible for planning, guiding, and coordinating a group of fellow metrologists to facilitate the movement of proficiency test artifacts across a region. The PT Analyst, another important role, gathers resulting calibration certificates for statistical review and reporting. The PT Coordinator and PT Analyst also provide informal mentorship and guidance to proficiency test participants by directing and reminding the participants the importance of following the PT Plan and ensuring all possible considerations are covered during the PT Planning phase. OWM is grateful for their assistance-in-kind to the program, as the PT program would not be a success without their cooperation and dedication.

At the RMAP meetings, OWM was able to provide Certificates of Appreciation to the 2024 PT coordinators and analysts, as they played a critical role in completing 18 PTs across the country, with 17 completed and reported on during the RMAP meetings. The PTs conducted consisted of various mass and volume echelons. There was a total of 10,360 evaluation points with a success rate of 98.4 %.
