X-ray Spectroscopy and Electronic Structure of Solids

High-resolution x-ray spectroscopy is carried out at a synchrotron light source to study the electronic properties of insulating chemical compounds. The x-ray absorption and x-ray emission spectra of these crystalline compounds reveal the band structure, many body effects, and phonon interactions that define many of the properties of the compound. X-ray spectra can be used to identify chemical compounds for analytical and forensic purposes.

Microcalorimeter X-ray Detector

Microcalorimeter x-ray detectors invented at NIST are developed for use in materials and physics applications. The goal is to exploit the advantages of these detectors while minimizing the technical complexity of operation and data processing that they impose.
