Forensic Trace Evidence

In response a National Academy of Science report, NIST has become involved with forensic gunshot residue analysis through it involvement with the Department of Justice and the Organization of Scientific Activity Committees. One of the roles we can perform to encourage good basic metrology.

X-ray Spectroscopy and Electronic Structure of Solids

High-resolution x-ray spectroscopy is carried out at a synchrotron light source to study the electronic properties of insulating chemical compounds. The x-ray absorption and x-ray emission spectra of these crystalline compounds reveal the band structure, many body effects, and phonon interactions that define many of the properties of the compound. X-ray spectra can be used to identify chemical compounds for analytical and forensic purposes.

Theoretical Calculations of Near-Edge X-ray Spectra

We are interested in first-principles calculations of near-edge x-ray spectra, including absorption and resonant inelastic scattering. Our goal is predictive modeling where the kind and location of atoms are the only adjustable parameters. We make use of and contribute to the ocean code.
