Dual-comb-based characterization of rapidly tuned lasers

October 10, 2011
Author(s)
Fabrizio R. Giorgetta, Esther Baumann, Ian R. Coddington, William C. Swann, Nathan R. Newbury, Zeb W. Barber, Peter Roos
We demonstrate a technique to calibrate the instantaneous frequency versus time from a rapidly tuned cw laser. Our dual-comb-based spectrometer can measure optical waveforms tuned at 1500-THz/s rates over 5-THz bandwidths at high precision.

Radiation, Multimode Propagation, and Substrate Modes in W-Band CPW Calibrations

October 10, 2011
Author(s)
Dylan F. Williams, Franz-Joseph Schmuckle, Ralf Dorner, G.N. Phung, Wolfgang Heinrich, Uwe Arz
We investigate the degradation of the accuracy of coplanar waveguide calibration standards at higher frequencies due to multi-mode propagation, substrate modes, and radiation. Based on a typical calibration substrate, we investigate these effects and their

High Speed Switching Characteristics of Pt/Ta2O5/Cu Memristive Switch

October 8, 2011
Author(s)
Pragya R. Shrestha, Adaku Ochia, Kin P. Cheung, Jason P. Campbell, Helmut Baumgart, Gary Harris
Accurate measurements of the transient details of switching a memristive switch are crucial to the elucidation of the switching mechanism. Such high-speed measurements are often plagued by artifacts. Here we describe a measurement technique capable of

Controlled transport of superparamagnetic beads with spin-valves

October 7, 2011
Author(s)
Wendy R. Altman, John M. Moreland, Stephen E. Russek, Bruce W. Han, Victor M. Bright
Trapping, release, and transport of individual or ensembles of 2.8 υm superparamagnetic beads functionalized with streptavidin were demonstrated using an addressable and non-volatile array of spin-valve (SV) traps integrated into a microfluidic channel

Coalescence of Single Photons Emitted by Disparate Single Photon Sources: The Example of InAs Quantum Dots and Parametric Down-Conversion Sources

October 5, 2011
Author(s)
Sergey V. Polyakov, Andreas Muller, Alexander E. Ling, Natalia B. Rutter, Edward B. Flagg, Edward Van Keuren, Alan L. Migdall, Glenn S. Solomon
In quantum mechanics, particles in identical states are indistinguishable, giving rise to effects with no classical analog. Single photons produced by fundamentally dissimilar physical processes will in general not be indistinguishable. We show how photons

COMPARISON OF TWO DIMENSION-REDUCTION METHODS FOR NETWORK SIMULATION MODELS

October 5, 2011
Author(s)
Kevin L. Mills, James J. Filliben
Experimenters characterize the behavior of simulation models for data communications networks by measuring multiple responses under selected parameter combinations. The resulting multivariate data may include redundant responses reflecting aspects of a

Effect of Moisture on Copolymer Fibers based on 5-amino-2-(p-aminophenyl)-benzimidazole

October 4, 2011
Author(s)
Guillaume Messin, Stephanie S. Watson, Amanda L. Forster, John R. Sieber
In recent years, there has been concern in the soft body armor community that copolymer fibers based on 5-amino-2-(p-aminophenyl)-benzimidazole can release hydrochloric acid, which could potentially be detrimental to other fibers that might come in contact

Predicting Human Behavior during Fires

October 4, 2011
Author(s)
Erica D. Kuligowski
Evacuation models, including engineering hand calculations and computational tools, are used to evaluate the level of safety provided by buildings during evacuation. Building designs and occupant procedures are based on the results produced from these

Source Code Security Analysis Tool Test Plan

October 4, 2011
Author(s)
Hsiao-Ming M. Koo, Romain Gaucher, Charline Cleraux, Jenise Reyes Rodriguez
This document provides a set of metrics, including test suites and methods, to determine how well a particular source code security analysis tool conforms to the requirements specified in Source Code Security Analysis Tool Functional Specification Version

DNA ENTROPOPHORESIS: A BALANCE OF ENTROPY AND DIFFUSION IN COMPLEX NANOCONFINEMENT

October 3, 2011
Author(s)
Samuel Stavis, Jon Geist, Michael Gaitan, Laurie E. Locascio, Elizabeth Strychalski
Entropophoresis - motion caused by an entropy gradient - is a novel nanofluidic method to direct the self-transport of biopolymers that established a new paradigm of nanofluidic functionality with broad relevance to lab-on-a-chip technol-ogy. Here, the

Metamodels towards Improved Domain Modeling for Semantic Inferencing

October 3, 2011
Author(s)
Paul W. Witherell, Anantha Narayanan Narayanan, Jae H. Lee, Sudarsan Rachuri
As information requirements have increased, domain models have become increasing complex and difficult to manage. Though domain-specific languages have been developed for domain experts, increasing their expressivity and decreasing their complexity, their

SteelVis User's Guide

October 3, 2011
Author(s)
Robert R. Lipman
This guide describes how to use SteelVis and its associated programs. SteelVis has two main functions: (1) to translate a CIS/2 (CIMsteel Integration Standards) file into an interactive 3D model in the form of a VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language)

SWIR calibration of spectralon reflectance factor

October 3, 2011
Author(s)
Catherine C. Cooksey, Georgi T. Georgiev, James J. Butler, Leibo Ding, Kurtis J. Thome
Satellite instruments operating in the reflective solar wavelength region require accurate and precise determination of the Bidirectional Reflectance Factor (BRF) of laboratory-based diffusers used in their pre-flight and on-orbit radiometric calibrations
