Organization & Structure

The NCNR is divided into several specialized groups that manage everything from the physics of the reactor to the software used by visiting scientists.

1. Reactor Operations and Engineering (ROE)

This group is the backbone of the facility, ensuring the neutron source provides a steady, safe source of neutrons for experiments.

  • Operations Team: Led by Randolph Strader, focusing on the operation of the 20MW reactor, operator training and qualifications, and emergency and security preparedness.
  • Engineering Team: Led by Andrew Main (A), this team manages reactor design and safety, licensing and compliance, systems and plant engineering, and design and maintenance of the liquid hydrogen cold sources.
  • Aging Reactor Management Team: Led by Andrew Gahan, this team provides mechanical and electrical maintenance, instrument calibration, and surveillance.

2. Neutron Condensed Matter Science (NCMS)

This group focuses on the scientific application of neutron scattering to understand the structure and dynamics of materials.

  • Structure and Dynamics of Materials: Led by Craig Brown, managing Spin Echo, HFBS, Powder Diffraction.
  • Macromolecular & Microstructural Science: Led by Paul Butler, managing VSANS, 30m SANS (NG7 and NGB), USANS, 10m SANS.
  • Condensed Matter Physics: Led by Nick Butch, managing the Thermal 3-Axis (BT7 and BT4), PoLAR, DCS, MACS.
  • Surfaces and Interfaces: Led by David Hoogerheide, managing CANDOR, MAGIK, PBR.

3. Research Facility Operations (RFO)

This group develops, maintains, and supports advanced neutron measurement capabilities and associated technology for NCNR.

  • Instrument Control Electronics: Led by Nick Maliszewskyj, motors and neutron detectors.
  • Instrument Control Software: Led by Steve Pheiffer, user interfaces for neutron instrument operation.
  • User Services: Led by Yamali Hernandez, sample environment, neutron beam polarization, sample prep labs, and user proposal coordination.
  • Mechanical Engineering Technicians: Led by Doug Johnson, assembly and maintenance of neutron instrumentation and support equipment.
  • Mechanical Engineering: Led by Dan Adler, design for instruments, shielding, and the neutron guide network.
  • Information Technology: Led by Alan Munter, support for facility computer and networking needs.
