EL Presents Advancements in Validating Models and Systems
  Peter Denno presented at the University of Maryland Institute for Systems Research (ISR) Colloquium series on February 25, 2013. His presentation "From Validating Models to Validating Systems" provided an overview of NIST work on model validation and requirements engineering.  NIST validation software applies rules assessing whether the logical structure of the model is consistent with the viewpoint of the engineering discipline. Denno described a framework for verification and validation where information from several models is combined. When an appropriately formulated model of requirements is among the models combined, more comprehensive validation and greater automation of engineering tasks may be possible. Afterwards, he met with ISR graduate students and Dr. John Baras to discuss research challenges, including formulating effective models of requirements for downstream engineering processes.

Recognition

EL Scientist Receives ASTM International Award of Merit
  Paul Stutzman of the Inorganic Materials Group received the 2013 ASTM International Award of Merit based on his efforts in ASTM Committee C01 on Cement. This award was established in 1949 by the ASTM Board of Directors, and is the highest award granted by the Society to an individual member for distinguished service, outstanding participation, and committee leadership.

The award citation notes that Stutzman's knowledge and commitment to excellence in cement standards development have had a major impact in construction materials and have made ASTM International a technical leader in today's global business world. Stutzman now has the honorary title of Fellow of ASTM International.
