Effect of Loading Rate Upon Conventional Ceramic Microindentation Hardness

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
George D. Quinn, P J. Patel, Isabel K. Lloyd
Dynamic micro-indentation hardness was evaluated for a steel, sintered silicon carbide, and an aluminum oxynitride. There was negligible effect upon Vickers hardness when loading rate was varied by almost three orders of magnitude.

Elastic Moduli Data for Polycrystalline Oxide Ceramics

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
R G. Munro
A compilation of elastic moduli data, including Young's modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus, and Poisson's ratio, is presented for polycrystalline oxide ceramics. The data have been collected from the technical literature, either as reported in textual or

Error Measurements and Analysis for an AC Josephson Voltage Standard

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
Charles J. Burroughs, Samuel Benz, Paul Dresselhaus
The Josephson arbitrary waveform synthesizer can be used as a precision voltage source for both ac and dc signals. Recent improvements in circuit designs have have resulted in output voltages greater than 100 mV so that we can investigate ac metrology

Fragility Curves, Damage Matrices, and Wind-Induced Loss Estimation

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
James J. Filliben, K Gurley, J P. Pinelli, Emil Simiu, M Subramanian
This note presents a conceptual framework for the definition of basic damage states and of the corresponding fragility curves and conditional probabilities, and its use for the estimation of damage matrices. The framework is designed with two

Free Radical-Induced Damage to DNA: Mechanisms and Measurement

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
M. Dizdaroglu, Pawel Jaruga, M Birincioglu, H Rodriguez
Free radicals are produced in cells by cellular metabolism and by exogenous agents. These species react with biomolecules in cells including DNA. The resulting damage to DNA which is also called oxidative damage to DNA, is implicated in mutagenesis

Grain Growth and Twin Formation in 0.74 PMN-0.26 PT

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
Jay S. Wallace, J M. Huh, J Blendell, C A. Handwerker
The mechanisms controlling normal and exaggerated grain growth in lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) ceramics have been investigated by varying the PbO-based liquid phase volume fraction from 0.03 to 0.6 and sintering temperature form 900 C to

High-Strength Concrete at High Temperature - An Overview

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
Long T. Phan
This paper presents results of NIST's experimental program on the effects of elevated temperature exposure on the mechanical properties and potential for explosive spalling of high strength concrete (HSC). Mechanical properties of HSC were measured by

Improved High-Current Thin-Film Multijunction Thermal Converters

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
Joseph R. Kinard Jr., Thomas E. Lipe Jr., Thomas F. Wunsch
We report on the fabrication of new thin-film multijunction thermal converters suitable for the measurement of current and new, simpler multiconverter modules that are much easier to manufacture than previous multiconverter modules.

Interlaboratory Comparison Using a Transport Josephson Voltage Standard System

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
Yi-hua D. Tang, Stuward L. Kupferman, Melquiades T. Salazar
A portable Josephson voltage standard (JVS) system has been used as a transfer standard to make an interlaboratory JVS comparison. The results are compared with an interlaboratory comparison between the same two JVS systems using transport Zeners made at

Intrusion Detection with Mobile Agents

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
Wayne Jansen
Effective intrusion detection capability is an elusive goal, not solved easily or with a single mechanism. However, mobile software agents go a long way toward realizing the ideal behavior desired in an Intrusion Detection System (IDS). This paper is an

Key Comparisons for Dummies: Lessons Learned

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
Dean G. Jarrett
This paper will discuss some of the challenges encountered during a recent key comparison. From these experiences, general lessons will be drawn that should prove useful both for the consultative committees and for future pilot laboratories as they

Longitudinal Spin Waves in a Dilute Bose Gas

June 1, 2002
Author(s)
J E. Williams, T Nikuni, Charles W. Clark
We present a kinetic theory for a dilute noncondensed Bose gas of two-level atoms that predicts the transient spin segregation observed in a recent experiment. The underlying mechanism driving spin currents in the gas is due to a mean-field effect arising
