Iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)5) is an extremely efficient flame inhibitor, yet its inhibition mechanism has not been described. The flame-inhibition mechanism of Fe(CO)5 in premixed and counterflow diffusion flames of methane, oxygen, and nitrogen is
