Postdoctoral position: Magnetics-based imaging and/or sensing

Postdoctoral Position at NIST in Boulder, Colorado

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) anticipates the need for a postdoctoral researcher in magnetic imaging and/or sensing. The Applied Physics Division’s Magnetic Imaging Group has several ongoing magnetic bio-imaging and biosensing projects based on magnetic nano- or microparticles and smart (size-changing) polymers, aimed at developing new types of magnetic probes for environmental and physiological sensing.  Goals include the development of novel stand-alone diagnostic devices, MRI contrast agents, and NMR-readable sensors. Dependent on background and interest, the researcher will be involved in the development of new magnetic materials and polymer composites, the design of new magnetic sensing devices and calculations of their field and mechanical properties, design and fabrication of NMR/MRI-related contrast agents and probes, and investigations into novel microfabrication processes (both bottom-up and top-down) as required to create such microscale devices, agents, or probes.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in the physical sciences or engineering, including Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or similar, with a strong publication track record. Applicants should also have significant prior experience in at least some of:

  • Cleanroom-based microfabrication
  • Magnetics
  • NMR/MRI
  • Polymer chemistry

The opportunity is located at NIST in Boulder, CO. The Department of Commerce is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
