In the last two years, manufacturers in the United States have experienced forced disruptions and many people have seen the impact. Innovations in supply chain resilience will enable U.S. manufacturers to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness, produce quality goods and vaccines, rapidly identify supply-chain disruptions and quality issues, and strengthen national security.

Accomplishments:
- Identified two broad areas of effort needed to move toward the goal of high-quality, lower-cost, and more readily available lyophilized products: (1) advancing lyophilization technologies and techniques and (2) strengthening the industry foundation.
- To advance lyophilization technologies and techniques, it was determined that technical innovations will be required in lyophilized products, the lyophilization process, and lyophilization equipment.
- To strengthen the industry foundation, it was determined that the interface between the industry and regulatory agencies must be strengthened for interagency communication and information dissemination and that a well-trained workforce be developed and maintained

Deliverables:
- Develop a technology roadmap to improve the resilience and capacity of the U.S. manufacturing supply chain through the digital thread.
- Identify critical weaknesses and gaps in digital thread technology to develop a tangible, actionable, industry-driven document that will guide research and enable effective adoption of digital thread technology throughout the extended supply chain.
Activities:
- Conduct stakeholder interviews, site visits, surveys and substantive literature reviews.
- Host and facilitate collaborative work sessions to develop roadmap priorities through collaborative ideation, critical design thinking, and consensus building activities throughout the project.
Potential Impacts:
Enable U.S. manufacturers to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness, produce higher quality goods, rapidly identify supply-chain disruptions and quality issues, and expand revenue opportunities.
