NSF DEVICES/EQUIPMENT

Neutron spin filter equipment is separated by type. Each has general parameters listed for user reference. Typically, the equipment chosen is determined by the specific experiment configurations (ex. wavelength). NSF team members and instrument contacts will assist in determining the appropriate equipment to be used for each experiment.

SHIELDED SOLENOIDS: These are comprised of an inner cylindrical aluminum body wound with copper wire producing a static, uniform magnetic field around the NSF. The outer shield is comprised of mumetal to reduce the effects of stray magnetic fields on the NSF lifetime. These devices incorporate an adiabatic spin inversion sleeve. The result is a compact piece of equipment that is two devices in one: a polarizer (or analyzer) and neutron spin flipper. These are in use at various instruments: SANS, TRIPLE AXIS, CANDOR.

END-COMPENSATED "MAGIC" BOXES: These are comprised of an inner aluminum vertical support frame with copper wound mumetal and mumetal plate. These are not shielded but still produce a static, uniform magnetic field around the NSF.  These devices incorporate an adiabatic spin inversion box. These devices are used almost exclusively on the Triple Axis instrument before the sample. The result is a compact piece of equipment that is two devices in one: a polarizer and neutron spin flipper.

UNSHIELDED SOLENOIDS: These are comprised of an cylindrical aluminum body as the support body for the NSF. The most current device is wound entirely with Teflon coated wire producing a static, uniform magnetic field around the NSF. There is no mumetal shield. These devices are used solely on the MACS instrument and enclose the polarizer, analyzer(s), and sample including sample environment equipment.

ELECTROMAGNETS AND COILS: These include an electromagnet (high field) and apparatuses (low field) used to apply a sample field. The are primarily in use at 30m SANS and VSANS.
