CHRNS supports K-12 education in a numerous ways. A unique CHRNS program, Research Experiences for Teachers, RET, gives high school teachers the opportunity to do a summer research project under the direction of an NCNR scientist or engineer. This provides the teachers a greater perspective on how science is done, and insights into career opportunities in STEM which they can then pass on to their students. Middle school teachers can take advantage of the NIST Summer Institute for Middle School Science Teachers, a collaboration between NIST and local school districts designed to coordinate with the middle school curriculum, providing teachers with resources and instructional tools for teaching math and science. Additional education materials are provided for classroom use. The NCNR provides tours of this unique research facility geared specifically for students and other education-based groups of all levels.
