NIST in Indiana

$458M

in recent and planned financial awards from NIST to organizations in the state of Indiana since 2022

Advanced manufacturing

  • The NIST CHIPS for America program will provide up to $458 million to semiconductor manufacturer SK Hynix in West Lafayette for a new production line for high-performance memory chips used for graphics processing and artificial intelligence.
  • Steel manufacturers in Indiana, the nation’s top steel producer, rely on NIST reference materials to check the chemical composition of alloys and calibrate quality testing instruments so buyers have confidence that products meet their specifications.
  • Since FY 2020, the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership, part of the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership, has received over $16.2 million in federal funds from NIST, which spurred more than $13.6 million in nonfederal investments, to provide high-value, affordable solutions to help businesses across Indiana increase profitability and competitiveness.

Purdue MEP helped MSP Manufacturing in Bloomington, a maker of precision machined products for the aerospace and defense industries, accommodate a 30% increase in business with training to increase employees’ skills, including as auditors to identify areas for improvements. MSP has realized $50,000 in improved productivity and 25% in time saved for quality inspections, and has increased sales by an additional 5%-10%.

Automotive

  • NIST’s CHIPS for America program was created, in part, to address the semiconductor shortage that began in 2021, which hit the automotive sector particularly hard. CHIPS has announced more than $6 billion in awards to U.S. companies for creating or expanding manufacturing capacity for the semiconductors that automakers and OEM suppliers need to make cars in America.
  • To support the adoption of electric vehicles, NIST accumulates, updates and disseminates good practices for measurement and device reliability for EV chargers based on its experience in measurement and instrumentation. The goal is for EV drivers to have the same trust in charging that users of gas pumps have in refueling.
  • Based on our expertise in developing cybersecurity standards, guidelines, best practices and other resources, NIST has issued a Cybersecurity Framework profile for Electric Vehicle Extreme Fast Charging Infrastructure to address vulnerabilities in the chargers’ multiple connected systems.
  • The NIST Center for Automotive Lightweighting provides automakers with the mechanical and physical measurement tools they need to reliably manufacture components from new, lighter materials. These lighter parts can increase fuel or battery efficiency and cut emissions.

Biotechnology, life sciences and health care

  • NIST reference materials help Indiana’s biotechnology industry innovate more quickly with quantitative analytical measurement tools for nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites and cell systems so that manufacturers can monitor and improve manufacturing methods and products.
  • Indiana’s pharmaceutical sector relies on the NIST Mass Spectrometry Data Center for data libraries that speed molecule identification and quality control for the pharmaceutical industry. This data is so widely trusted that it is packaged with nearly every mass spectrometer sold.
  • Purdue University and five Indiana companies, ranging from start-up to established, benefit from the NIST-sponsored National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL), headquartered in Newark, Delaware. NIIMBL accelerates innovation in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, developing standards and measurement science for the industry and creating a well-trained workforce. In 2021, NIST renewed its investment of $70 million in NIIMBL for another period of five years.
  • NIST’s calibration materials for magnetic resonance imaging help medical researchers develop quantitative tests that can rapidly determine if treatments for glioblastoma and other cancers are working, speeding clinical decisions.

Food and agriculture

  • NIST’s library of reference materials helps to ensure that foods grown or eaten in the U.S. are safe from contaminants and allergens that could cause illness to consumers. Indiana companies also rely on NIST reference materials to check their test methods and help them comply with the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act.
  • NIST develops and updates inspection procedures and trains state regulatory officials on how to verify the net contents of packaged foods to protect consumers and businesses and ensure fair trading for grocery stores, restaurants and customers.
