As specialists in trace and particle analysis, the Group engages in a wide range of methods applicable to the detection and characterization of nuclear materials. The work can benefit national security, domestic event response, materials detection and characterization, and naturally-occurring radioactivity characterization. Expertise in microscopy, digital autoradiography and similar techniques complements more traditional methods such as nuclear counting and mass spectrometry.
Examples of research include:
- Isotopic identification and activity measurements by nuclear counting such as Alpha Spectroscopy
- Radionuclide detection and quantitation by autoradiography
- Actinide detection and quantitation by fission track analysis
