Bioanalytical Science Group

Providing the measurement science, standards, technology, and data required to support the nation's needs in determining the composition, structure, quantity, and function of proteins, peptides, post-translational modifications, and metabolites.

We provide the measurement science, standards, technology, and data required to support the nation's needs in determining the composition, structure, quantity, and function of proteins, peptides, post-translational modifications such as glycosylation and phosphorylation, and related biomolecules such as metabolites.  In partnership with U.S. industry, government agencies, and scientific institutions, the group performs fundamental and applied research on the characterization and quantitation of proteins, peptides, and their mixtures using techniques such as mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, electrophoresis, and immunoassays.  The Group provides measurement science, reference materials, reference data, and technologies to support accuracy and comparability of measurements needed to advance biotechnology, biomedical and bioscience research, biomanufacturing, and health care.  Specific areas of interest include measurements and standards for clinical diagnostics and biotherapeutics.

Projects and Programs

Biomanufacturing Initiative

Ongoing
The objective of the NIST biomanufacturing program is to support US biopharmaceutical industry delivery of high quality and low cost protein drugs around the world. The mission is fulfilled through the development of standards, measurement science, and state of the art tools that support advances in

Development of Proteomics-Based Methods for Protein Quantification

Ongoing
Reference measurement procedures and standard reference materials help ensure that routine clinical assays provide accurate results across different laboratories and over time. Lists of such higher-order methods are published by the Joint Committee for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine (JCTLM)
