Kristen Ramsey, PhD is a National Research Council (NRC) postdoctoral researcher in the Biomaterials Group, working under the mentorship of Kirsten Parratt.
Kristen received her B.S. in General Biology from the University of Maryland and earned her PhD in Microbiology at Yale University under Barbara Kazmierczak. Her doctoral work focused on identifying signals influencing phenotypic heterogeneity in Pseudomonas aeruginosa using targeted molecular approaches in combination with advanced analytical measurements including flow cytometry and timelapse microscopy. At NIST, Kristen is building on her previous experience to identify fit-for-purpose test methods to measure and characterize microbial cell viability using fluorescence and impedance flow cytometry in combination with microbial growth-based assays. Her work focuses on improving microbial counting measurement assurance by expanding beyond cell count to also incorporate high-quality viability measurements that are transferrable across use cases. Outcomes from this project will support stakeholders in Biotechnology in the form of improved measurements, documentary standards, and reference datasets.
