CHRNS Implements FAIR-data management at the NCNR
(Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable)

Searchable Metadata

  • Add sample metadata through instrument control software (NICE)
    • Keywords selected from predefined taxonomy or free-form
    • Metadata linked to current sample is embedded in datafiles
  • Metadata search system pulls from datafiles

ORCiD integration

  • Integration of ORCID into CHRNS measurement worfklow
    Users can link their ORCiD  to the proposal and user-management system (IMS)
    • Allows login using ORCiD credentials (one less password to remember)
    • Allows linking experiment metadata with ORCiD record
  • Instrument Control software (NICE) pulls participant ORCiDs for experiments from IMS
    • Incorporated in DOI metadata for experiment - data citations are linked to users
  • In the future, ORCiD can provide identity management for future remote computing access

Permanent Identifiers for Experiments (DOI)

  • Automatic creation of permanent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for each NCNR beam experiment
  • Published to https://data.nist.gov
  • Metadata included with record:
    • Experiment ID (from IMS)
    • Title and description
    • ORCiD of all participants
    • Start and stop dates
    • Links to raw data and online data processing resources
  • Directly citable in publications derived from the data

Capture of Process Metadata

  • Experimental conditions
  • Measurement context supplied by user or by semi-automated workflows, e.g.
    • Intent of the measurement (scattering vs. background ...)
    • Relationships between measurements (grouping)
    • Identification of calibration files
  • All added to searchable metadata above

Traceable Data Processing

  • Track the history of all processing steps (embedded in processed file, or as a separate download)
  • Machine-readable formats
  • Best effort to support "replay" or reloading of the steps directly into the processing software, for verification or alteration of protocols.
  • Encourage users to include this with publications of processed data (or in supplemental materials)
