Sustainability and Energy

Sustainability continues to be a driver of economic growth as global demands for diminishing resources increase, renewable and alternative energy technology needs expand and environmental concerns heighten. Sustainable manufacturing can provide you with a competitive advantage in a crowded marketplace as customers, investors and communities look for more environmentally friendly companies. The MEP National Network can help you identify energy savings, consult on environmental concerns and train your employees on effective safety strategies.

Energy Assessments

The MEP National Network can help you understand modern strategies for reducing costs through energy savings. MEP Centers provide you with coaching and training on techniques for improving energy efficiency in manufacturing and establishing certified energy management systems (ISO 50001) available to small and medium-sized manufacturers.

Environmental Management Systems

Many manufacturers must respond to customer requirements around environmental management systems (ISO 14001) and comply with state and federal environmental regulations. The MEP National Network can help you understand how environmental requirements align with company strategies. Solutions can reduce your operating expenses while bringing your company into compliance with current regulations.

Health and Safety Services

Manufacturing facilities can present a variety of health and safety risks to employees. In addition to the negative effects of injury, companies can be weighed down from the costs associated with preventable incidents. The MEP National Network has trainers and evaluators ready to assist you with a variety of health and safety concerns including hazardous materials handling, machinery operation and facilities maintenance.

NVIE has helped us significantly in our energy savings and production efficiency.

Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness, Manufacturing Extension Partnership

This report examines ten ongoing regional initiatives that support manufacturers. Drawing on a diverse group of individual case studies, the report identifies the key partners and their roles, the resources they accessed, the impact of the effort, and the prospects for the future. In particular, the case studies often note the many roles that the National Institute for Standards and Technology's Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST MEP) Centers are playing in the success of these efforts.

The manufacturing sector accounts for about a third of primary energy consumed in the U.S. While most of that effort has sought savings from large manufacturers, more energy efficiency programs are beginning to address the needs facing small to medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs). This report discusses barriers, opportunities, and solutions to designing energy efficiency programs that result in significant savings from smaller manufacturers.
