Overcoming Obstacles to Scaling a Process

About

Advanced & Innovative Multifunctional Materials (AIMM), located in Dayton, Ohio, manufactures a material designed to remove contaminants from water, primarily focusing on dye contaminants and PFAS, also known as forever chemicals.

The Challenge

AIMM developed a process for their product but faced challenges when they tried to scale up. The process that worked on a small scale didn't work when scaled because the water vapor released would clog the lines. They realized that the more they tried to scale, the more problems they would encounter. If they wanted to scale to 50 times, they would need help.
One of the most valuable things that FastLane did was to think beyond what we said our problem was. They understood what we were trying to accomplish and helped us to not only accomplish our goal but to also lean out our process along the way. As a result, our process is optimized and scalable.

MEP's Role

FastLane, the local Ohio MEP partner, started by assessing the problem and then facilitating a brainstorming session to troubleshoot and gather potential solutions. They provided technical advice and recommended machinery that could help AIMM scale. FastLane presented multiple options and collaborated with the AIMM team to test potential solutions. They also assisted AIMM in sourcing materials and reducing equipment costs, saving the team time and money. FastLane’s support enabled AIMM to move from promising a new technology to demonstrating their capabilities, which has helped AIMM partner with larger players.
