Advancing Manufacturing Readiness for Next-Generation Laser Connectivity Products

About

Dayton Photonics, based in Dayton, Ohio, is a small startup developing new technology that uses lasers to provide communication connectivity to the most remote and difficult environments. The Theia(TM) fiberless optic system is a wireless fiber optic solution that allows broadband internet networks without the need for physical fiber optic installation, reducing costs and saving time. This product will be especially useful in hard-to-reach locations. It is expected to be used for various applications such as military, emergency response, and commercial uses.

The Challenge

Dayton Photonics had a solid benchtop prototype they were using to demonstrate their capabilities. They wanted to move from the prototype to a market-ready product. They asked for FastLane’s help to build out their supply chain. They sought assistance in identifying local and regional vendors and in optimizing the subsystems for manufacturing.
As a tech startup working to meet the Department of Defense domestic sourcing requirements, we quickly realized we needed manufacturing and sourcing expertise to get ahead of this challenge. FastLane stepped in with the right connections, advice, and guidance – helping us identify qualified suppliers and ask the right questions. Their support laid the groundwork for scalable growth and long-term success.

MEP's Role

FastLane collaborated with Dayton Photonics to identify the subsystems needed for their product, find gaps in their product launch process, and simplify their supply chain requirements. Then, FastLane offered recommendations on how to optimize manufacturing and streamline ordering. They also prioritized the most critical components to address first. As a result, Dayton Photonics is partnering with small businesses to produce pre-production units. The Theia(TM) fiberless optic system units are being piloted by internet service providers and showcased in Dayton, Ohio.
