Founded in 1942 by Norman Edmund, Edmund Optics is a ‘MADE in New Jersey’ manufacturer specializing in optical and imaging technologies. With over 80 years of experience, they serve various industries, including life sciences, the Department of Defense (DOD), industrial inspection, semiconductor, and R&D, delivering precision-engineered optical solutions. Headquartered in Barrington, New Jersey, Edmund Optics continues to drive innovation and remain at the forefront of optical technology through a commitment to quality, customization, and global reach.
Edmund Optics is always on the lookout for ways to continue growing and avoid any inefficiencies that could slow down their growth if not addressed. As they sought to break into the booming biomedical industry, they quickly discovered that earning the ISO 13485 certification—essential for working with this sector—was no small feat. On top of this, the fast-approaching CMMC certification, set to roll out in the coming year, added another layer of complexity. For Edmund Optics, achieving this certification was not only about compliance—it was about ensuring they remained a top-tier supplier, ready to meet the strict demands of their clients.
Beyond certifications, Edmund Optics also wanted to ensure their employees were prepared for the future. They recognized the importance of keeping their team sharp, especially in a fast-paced technology sector. GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) training became a top priority, not just for their current workforce but for incoming engineering students as well.
The contacts they [NJMEP] have is phenomenal; what you do and how you bring them all together is unbelievable.
NJMEP, part of the MEP National Network™, stepped in to provide the guidance and support they needed to reach their goals. The first step was addressing the ISO 13485 certification. NJMEP worked closely with the Edmund Optics team to break down the complex requirements and implement the quality management systems necessary to meet the biomedical industry’s rigorous standards.
Next, attention turned to the upcoming CMMC certification. Knowing that cybersecurity compliance would soon become a critical requirement for DOD suppliers, NJMEP helped Edmund Optics prepare well in advance. They started by evaluating existing security protocols, identifying areas where improvements were needed, and implementing changes that ensured compliance with the new standard.
Once the certifications were on track, NJMEP and Edmund Optics turned their focus to workforce development. The next step was to address the company’s need for GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) training, essential for staying competitive in a fast-paced industry. NJMEP organized a series of training sessions for Edmund Optics employees, making sure the team gained practical, hands-on skills that went beyond the basics.
