Accreditation Leads to Market Diversification

About

Founded in 2006, ALD Thermal Treatment Inc. is a premier source of vacuum heat treatment services to the precision metal component segment of the U.S. manufacturing sector. ALD employs more than 50 employees at its Port Huron, Michigan, location. ALD is certified in AS9100D, ISO 9001:2015, and IATF 16949:2016, and is Nadcap accredited.

The Challenge

To fully utilize available capacity, ALD wanted to diversify its customer base to include the healthcare industry. Providing heat treating services in the healthcare industry requires specialized accreditation to MedAccred standards. ALD did not possess the internal knowledge of how to become MedAccred accredited, so the decision was made to seek assistance in initiating and engaging in the accreditation process. ALD turned to Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC), part of the MEP National Network™, for help.
Working with MMTC has been critical to our Nadcap and MedAccred efforts. Their help has opened new and potentially profitable markets to us.
— Matthew Hoffman, Quality Manager

MEP's Role

MMTC staff met with senior ALD leadership to discuss the process of how to move forward with the pre-audit phase of MedAccred accreditation. ALD utilized the Medical Manufacturers MedAccred Accreditation Pathway (MedMMAP) to facilitate the program in partnership with MMTC. The process required a four-day, onsite audit to identify if industry standards of critical processes are followed, provide visibility of the entire supply chain, and ensure proper documentation is maintained. Upon completion of the pre-audit, ALD would be able to schedule an official audit for accreditation.
