Plastic Packaging Manufacturer Enhances Quality by Upgrading to ISO 9001:2015 Standard

About

Founded in 1868, Greiner Packaging is a prominent player in the rigid plastic packaging industry, with its headquarters located in Austria and a local presence in Pittston, Pennsylvania. The company operates through two integral business units: packaging and assistec. The packaging unit excels in producing various packaging solutions, while the assistec unit specializes in crafting technical parts and complete assemblies from plastic. Greiner plays a vital role in safeguarding a diverse array of products, including yogurt, salads and detergents. Clients from diverse markets place their trust in the quality of packaging delivered by Greiner. The company's commitment to technological diversity is evident through a wide range of production and decoration technologies. This ensures that Greiner can offer comprehensive advice and services while actively pursuing its sustainability objectives.

The Challenge

Greiner Packaging holds system certifications in food service and desired to partner with NEPIRC, part of the Pennsylvania MEP and the MEP National Network™, to assist with enhancing its current quality management system (QMS) for certification to the ISO 9001:2015 standard. This certification would meet Greiner’s corporate requirements and ensure its quality processes and protocols met client requirements.
NEPIRC has been a great source of information and assistance across many different areas and topics, and we look forward to a continued relationship.
— Maria Naholnik, Director of Quality

MEP's Role

Through this comprehensive engagement, NEPIRC provided documentation development and consultation for creating the organization’s ISO 9001:2015 quality management system (QMS). NEPIRC worked with Greiner Packaging to modify its current system to work in concert with the ISO 9001:2015 standard. Where Greiner’s QMS could not be modified, NEPIRC provided guidance in developing the proper documentation to ensure the system met the ISO 9001 requirements.

In addition to the QMS development, NEPIRC provided ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditor Training to Greiner employees. The training focused on the proper conduct and roles of an auditor and the content and structure of a documented quality system. The Greiner team learned the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard; how to conduct an internal audit and effective interview skills; planning, preparing, and reporting audit results; and the roles and responsibilities of the auditor.

Lastly, NEPIRC provided a pre-assessment audit to determine and validate the conformance of the company’s quality management system to the ISO 9001:2015 standard.
