PLIDCO Improves Throughput and Capacity with Thoughful Design in New Building

About

PLIDCO was founded in 1949 by Joseph B. and Berneice K. Smith.  It manufactures hundreds of thousands of pipeline leak repair and maintenance fittings that are sold and installed safely and reliably around the world. Its Northeast Ohio factory offers nearly 248,200 square feet of office and manufacturing space and employs approximately 100 pipeline repair professionals.

PLIDCO pipeline fittings have been used for high pressure emergency pipeline repairs and routine pipeline maintenance in a wide variety of applications, both onshore and subsea. Applications include oil, gas, water, chemical, steam, slurry and other piping systems. PLIDCO high pressure fittings are designed and manufactured following the ASME/ANSI applicable codes and adhere to a strict quality control program. PLIDCO'S proven products have enabled customers to avoid or minimize costly shutdown times, while keeping staff and the environment safe.

The Challenge

PLIDCO reached out to MAGNET, part of the Ohio MEP and the MEP National Network™, to assist in creating a new equipment layout, moving from an 80,000-square-foot facility to a 248,000-square-foot facility.
I would recommend using MAGNET to help facilitate a strategic plan. They brought insights and experiences from a different perspective that allowed us to develop an actionable plan the entire team bought into. It was extremely helpful as owners to be able to participate instead of facilitate the meetings, the team was much more comfortable and feel we had more honest conversations around the challenges we faced and solutions to overcome them.
— Tracie Roberts, Vice President

MEP's Role

Created new plant layout with process efficiencies, including dividing 10 value streams into two major process flows to optimize value streams with highest volumes; identifying bottlenecks and which equipment needed focus to improve throughput; reducing material handling distances; and identifying methods to reduce time waiting for material handling. The project moved quickly. All solutions have now been implemented, resulting in greatly increased impacts.
