SURAMET Workshop 2014

South American Metrology (SURAMET) Workshop on Renewable Energy and Climate Science for the Americas: Metrology and Technology Challenges

The two-and-a-half day workshop, aimed at identifying opportunities for cooperation and training in measurement capabilities in the area of renewable energy and climate science, brought together SIM's 5 SURAMET Countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Individual and panel led discussions lead to a lively dialogue and helped to identify numerous regional priorities.

  • To effectively support their countries energy policies, the region's NMIs must continually strive for improved measurements to optimize renewable energy yields – an important component to meeting rising energy demands.
  • Urbanization presents both opportunities and challenges when it comes to increasing energy efficiency and the reduction of emissions. To capitalize on these opportunities, cities will need to develop methods of introducing renewables into dense populations and accurately measuring emissions from a variety of sources.
  • Engaging regional stakeholders is key to furthering the countries' objectives in renewable energy and climate science measurements. For example, Metrologists and Meterologists present at the workshop reiterated the complementary skillsets and capacities between the two scientific communities which, if more closely coordinated, could greatly enhance the regions forecasting, modeling, reporting inventories and measurement data collection capabilities.
  • With such a diversity in size and capacity, cooperation and communication between the NMIs will be crucial to meeting both individual country and regional energy and climate science policies.
