NIST Support for HiCASS (High Capacity Alongside Sea Based Sustainment)
Below are several files to support the HiCASS effort.
NIST teamed with JJMA in 2001-2002 to develop concepts for Skin-to-Skin Replenishment. This paper was published in the ASNE Symposium 2003 "Expeditionary Force Projection" Proceedings.
This document encompasses several concepts that NIST Intelligent Systems Division began to study including:small ship handling at sea, RO/RO ramp handling, and shipboard welding and well-deck cleaning among other concepts.

1/16th scale Rail Crane RoboCrane designed to support the Office of Naval Research's Mobile Offshore Base (MOB) concept of cargo retrieval from ships at sea. The Crane includes two rails that allow a center trolley to manipulate cargo with (green) heavy lift cables and control the spreader bar and cargo with (red) RoboCrane cables. The dual spreader bars allow insertion of the lower spreader bar into ship cargo holds.
1/16th scale Luffing Crane RoboCrane, alternative to the Rail Crane, designed to support the Office of Naval Research's Mobile Offshore Base (MOB) concept of cargo retrieval from ships at sea. The Crane includes a luffing crane with movable tag line bar along the crane boom. All (green) heavy lift cables and (red) control cables protrude from the crane tip and down to suspended spreader bars. The dual spreader bars allow insertion of the lower spreader bar into ship cargo holds. The tagline beam moves to allow a more compact RoboCrane control scheme than using a fixed beam at the base of the crane.
