Dr. Michael Powell

Michael Powell is a Cybersecurity Engineer at the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Rockville, Maryland. His research focuses on cybersecurity for the manufacturing sector, particularly how it impacts industrial control systems.

Dr. Powell joined the NCCoE in 2017. In his previous positions, he was responsible for the management/oversight of building and commissioning of US Navy DDG-51 class ships. He also served in the United States Navy for over 20 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.  He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, A Master’s degree in Public Administration, and a Master’s degree in Information Technology. Dr. Powell completed his Doctorate degree in Applied Computing at Pace University in West Chester, New York.

Denis Bergeron

Denis Bergeron received a B.S. in chemistry from Loyola University New Orleans and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Nottingham, he came to NIST as a National Research Council (NRC) Fellow in 2006 and joined the Radioactivity Group as a research chemist in 2008. His two daughters think a bowling analogy for targeted alpha therapy seems like a stretch.

James McCarthy

Jim McCarthy is a senior security engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE). He currently serves as the lead for NCCoE energy sector projects where his work focuses on security data analytics, secure architecture for power delivery systems, IT/OT asset management, and situational awareness for the electric sector. Prior to joining the NCCoE, Mr. McCarthy worked in various cybersecurity roles at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Transportation, where he managed cybersecurity incident response teams and conducted security assessments on components of the nation’s critical infrastructure systems.

Ryan McKenna

Ryan McKenna is a Ph.D. student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he works in the DREAM lab under the supervision of Gerome Miklau and Daniel Sheldon. He received his B.S. from the University of Delaware in mathematics and computer science. His primary research area is privacy-preserving data analytics. He is particularly interested in the practical side of differential privacy, and developing algorithms, tools, and systems to deploy in real-world settings where privacy is important.
