Gutchess Lumber Finds Success with New ERP System Implementation

About

Since 1904, Gutchess Lumber has been producing top-quality northern hardwood lumber. The company's longevity and reputation show their long-standing dedication, established over 120 years ago, to providing customers with high-quality products and services. As a fifth-generation, family- and employee-owned business, they continue each day to meet and exceed their customers' expectations. The more than 500 employee owners, including some from second and third generations, are committed to the mission.

The Challenge

Gutchess has always taken pride in producing products that exceed the expectations of demanding buyers worldwide. To stay committed to exceeding customers' needs quickly and efficiently, they needed to find new solutions for how information flows through their facilities. Previously, information flow depended on multiple software programs used alongside manual spreadsheets and considerable oversight from employees to ensure accurate data was available whenever and wherever it was needed.

Gutchess Lumber successfully implemented a brand-new, company-wide ERP system with minimal disruption to production and our customers. Our new system is contributing to many opportunities for benefits, including efficiency improvements, reduced rework, and broader reporting capabilities. We are very appreciative of TDO’s assistance with this critical project. Thank you again for your support.

MEP's Role

Gutchess collaborated with the Central New York Technology Development Organization (TDO), part of the New York MEP, to facilitate a Value Stream Mapping exercise to align on and document the current process flow. This resulted in a thorough review of several ERP solutions and the eventual choice of Lumber Track. TDO helped with contract negotiations to ensure that the project scope and implementation plan included all necessary components. They also offered Project Management Support and Coaching throughout all phases of implementation until Gutchess achieved stabilization.
