ITL Standards Activities History

Our History in Standards

ITL has a long history and deep expertise in the development of standards. Examples include:

  • ITL produced its earliest Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) in the late 1960s.
  • Our public cryptographic algorithms competitions date back decades and continue today with a focus on international standardization.
  • Since 1984, ITL has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a standards developer.
  • Throughout the 1980s, ITL developed several American National Standards that were eventually superseded by standards developed in the private sector.
  • Today, ITL maintains its ANSI accreditation solely for the purpose of maintaining one biometric standard.
