Mexican Vara

The Mexican Vara was made in 1846. It is one of four in the NIST Museum collection. The standard was presented to the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1847 by the Corps. Century Dictionary states that the Mexican Vara = 32.9927 inches or approx. 83.7494 cm. All four varas in the collection are made of brass and stamped with an eagle on cactus.
