The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Gaithersburg, Maryland campus was constructed in the early 1960s to address the cramped and outdated facilities of NIST's original location in Washington, D.C. Construction of the NIST Gaithersburg campus commenced in 1961 and was completed in phases over the next decade.

All the material in this collection was retrieved from the "Time Capsule Washington DC., NBS Chemistry Building" Library/Archives Subject File.
On March 23, 1916 copper box containing NBS chemistry memorabilia was deposited in the corner-stone of the NBS Chemistry Building in Washington DC.
After the building was demolished in the early 60’s, the box was lost for decades, but has returned to NIST Gaithersburg.
