E. W. Müller Young Scientist Award

The E. W. Müller Young Scientist Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the International Field Emission Society (IFES). Named after the founder of the society, the award recognizes a young scientist for a recent and original scientific work on a topic area of relevance to the mission of the society, i.e. high field nanoscience and atom probe microscopy. The two-stage selection process is highly competitive, with a single winner being chosen during the APT&M conference.

Candidates for the E.W. Müller Young Scientist Award must meet the following criteria:

  1. The candidate must be a Ph.D. student or have obtained their diploma within the last two years preceding the APT&M meeting.
  2. The candidate must upload a complete application package to the International Field Emission Society website at (http://fieldemission.org/form.php) before the 15th of January 2018. The package must include:
    1. the abstract for the presentation/paper, with 5 keywords (1 page);
    2. the scientific paper (6 pages);
    3. a short CV of the candidate (1 page, with a High-Resolution photo); and
    4. a support letter from the Ph.D. advisor of the candidate (1 page).

Please note: The submission deadline for the Müller Award competition will not be extended, even if the abstract submission deadline is extended for the rest of the conference.

Please note: Candidates must also submit a copy of their abstract to the APT&M 2018 “Call for Papers” before the 15th of January 2018.  Selection of the finalists will be completed before February 15th. Any abstract not selected for the finals will be placed under consideration for inclusion in the conference as an oral presentation or as a poster.

  1. Finalists must present an oral presentation on their paper to be eligible to receive the award. The presentation will be 15 minutes in length, with an additional 5 minutes allocated for questions and answers. (Note: Time limits will be strictly enforced.)
  2. The winner of the competition is expected to participate in the entire conference.

Finalist selection process:

No more than six (6) finalists will be chosen by a scientific review committee composed of members representing a broad cross-section of the IFES membership. The criteria for selecting the finalists will be:

  • novelty and quality of the scientific work;
  • relevance of the scientific work to the IFES mission;
  • quality of the scientific paper; and
  • scientific quality of the candidate.

Recipient selection process:

One (1) candidate will be chosen to receive the Müller Award. Each finalist will deliver an oral presentation in a special Müller Award session to be held during the conference. A scientific review committee will meet that evening to select the overall winner of the competition. The criteria for selecting the award recipient will be:

  • novelty and quality of the scientific work;
  • relevance of the scientific work to the IFES mission;
  • quality of the scientific paper;
  • quality of the oral presentation (Note: Time limits must be adhered to.);
  • performance of the candidate during the oral question and answer session; and
  • scientific quality of the candidate.
