MEC Heber Springs Partnering with the State of Arkansas and AEDC Manufacturing Solutions for Manufacturing Excellence and Growth for the Future

About

Heber Springs, AR has a population of 6,856 people and is in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in north central Arkansas. Mayville Engineering Company (MEC) acquired the MEC Heber Springs facility in December 2018 as part of the purchase of Defiance Metal Products. Founded in 1945 in Mayville, Wisconsin, MEC provides a broad range of prototyping and tooling, production fabrication, coating, assembly, and aftermarket services.

Overall, the company operates 20 facilities in seven states with nearly 3,000,000 square feet of manufacturing space. MEC’s facilities are strategically located in Arkansas, Ohio, Michigan, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. This year, the company was named No. 1 on the FAB 40 list of the largest fabricators in North America for the 11th year in a row.

The Challenge

After being acquired by MEC in 2018, the Heber Springs location needed updating and needed to improve its layout to be considered for additional work from the new parent company. For help with this and training their expanding workforce the company turned to Arkansas Manufacturing Solutions, part of the MEP National Network™ and the Arkansas Economic Development Commission.
After reviewing many alternative sites and states, we are focusing additional investment in Heber Springs due to the availability of a highly skilled manufacturing workforce, growth in regional demand and potential further market growth opportunities. We are grateful for the support of the city of Heber Springs, Cleburne County, and the State of Arkansas (Arkansas Economic Development Commission - including Manufacturing Solutions) for their ongoing support of MEC Heber Springs and look forward to our future success together.
— David Higgs, Executive Vice President - Fabrication Operations

MEP's Role

MEC Heber Springs worked with the state of Arkansas’ Economic Development group (AEDC) for training events in leadership development, value stream mapping, quick changeover SMED and several job specific technical training. This assistance helped position Heber Springs for several business improvements that helped position the company for growth.
