ITL lives and breathes research. Our research provides the technical basis for our contributions to standards bodies and has fostered our reputation of impartiality and technical expertise within the standards space.
ITL also carries out unique statutory responsibilities to develop and maintain security guidelines for federal information systems. This requires collaboration with other agencies, academia, industry, the public, and international stakeholders, including hosting public workshops and convening topic-specific working groups (like the Interagency International Cybersecurity Standardization Working Group).
ITL often relies heavily on the input of broad, diverse stakeholder groups. The technical guidance, FIPS, test methods, and resources that NIST develops reflects the input of our broad stakeholders (and often becomes the basis for ITL’s candidate submissions to various standards bodies).
