Several IEEE 1588 products were tested during the LXI Consortium meeting in Munich from April 25-2, 2006. IEEE 1588 is required in LXI Consortium Class B instrumentation. - New products and literature introduced at the 2005 Conference on IEEE 1588.
Several new products were introduced at the conference both in paper presentations and via participation in the plug fest. The first book on IEEE 1588 was announced. - 2005 Conference on IEEE 1588
The second conference IEEE 1588 took place at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur, Switzerland from October 10-12, 2005. The workshop was attended by 90 researchers, developers, and users of the technology from Europe, Canada, Asia-Pacific, and the USA. The industries represented included industrial automation, military, test and measurement, telecommunications, semiconductor equipment manufactures, and semiconductor and board suppliers. An IEEE 1588 plug fest was held as part of the conference.

On March 20, 2005 the Standards Board of the IEEE Standards Association approved the PAR authorizing the P1588 Working Group to extend the original IEEE 1588 standard.
- Call for Participation IEEE 1588 Study Group
The attendees at the 2004 IEEE Conference recommended opening the standard for extensions to accommodate new application areas and technical features. The chair of the I&M Society TC-9 Committee has established a study group to revise the standard.
- Semiconductor support for IEEE 1588
At the 2004 IEEE 1588 Conference on September 27-29, 2004, Intel described support for IEEE 1588 on a forthcoming embedded processor chip.

The workshop was attended by 70 researchers, developers, and users of the technology from Europe, Canada, and the USA. The industries represented included industrial automation, military, test and measurement, telecommunications, semiconductor equipment manufactures, and semiconductor and board suppliers. The first ever IEEE 1588 plug fest was held as part of the conference.
- IEEE 1588 passes IEC ballot for dual label as IEC 61588
On May 21, 2004 IEEE 1588 passed ballot to be dual labeled by both the IEEE and the IEC. The IEC number will be IEC 61588 and the target date for publication is July 31, 2004.

- 2003 Workshop on IEEE 1588
A developers workshop on IEEE 1588 took place at the NIST facility in Gaithersburg, Md. on September 24, 2003. The industries represented included industrial automation, military, test and measurement, telecommunications, semiconductor equipment manufactures, and semiconductor and board suppliers.

The ODVA today announced plans to add time synchronization services, termed CIPsync , for real-time control applications to its Common Industrial Protocol (CIP ). CIPsync will be based on the recent IEEE-1588 standard. A copy of the ODVA press release may be viewed here.
Version V019.13 of IEEE 1588 passed final balloting in May of 2002. The standard was submitted to the Review Committee of the IEEE Standards Organization and was approved as an IEEE standard on September 12, 2002. IEEE 1588 was published in November 2002. It is now available from the IEEE in both hardcopy and pdf formats.
