Paulina Kuo is a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). While organizationally at NIST she may be a little hard to find, she is part of the Stanford laser-physics family tree (Fejer-Byer-Harris-Siegman). Her current research interests are in nonlinear optics involving single photons. She joins Dr. Charles W. Clark as a select member of NIST staff whose name can be spelled out with chemical symbols: Phosphorus Gold Lithium Sodium Potassium Uranium Oxygen.

Tom Bruno

Tom Bruno led the Fluid Characterization Group of the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division at NIST’s Boulder, Colorado, campus. He has done research on properties of fuel mixtures, explosives, reacting fluids and environmental pollutants. He is also involved in research on supercritical fluid extraction and chromatography of bioproducts, the development of novel analytical methods for environmental contaminants, novel detection devices for chromatography, and he manages the division’s analytical chemistry laboratory. In his spare time, he is an avid and accomplished woodworker and has hand-built all the furniture in his house. Tom is very proud of his wife, a talented musician, and his daughter, a biologist who specializes in arachnology.

Kate Ross is an assistant professor at Colorado State University, where her research group studies magnetic materials that exhibit unusual effects due to quantum mechanics. Kate enjoys the typical Colorado activities such as riding horses, skiing and fly fishing. She also recently discovered the joy of knitting. She has two cats and a husband, and the whole family is expecting a baby in April. The cats are being gently prepared for the arrival of their new sibling.
