NIST Supports Key Sectors in Arizona

Advanced manufacturing

Arizona MEP helped Pilgrim Aerospace Fasteners, a Chandler-based manufacturer of screws, bolts and other fasteners, improve performance and manage growth by reducing lead times for orders, promoting efficiency, and sustaining safety practices. Pilgrim also participated in ExporTech™, a program jointly offered by NIST’s MEP and the Department of Commerce U.S. Commercial Service to help companies enter or expand into global markets. Pilgrim has realized $650,000 in new sales, retained 37 jobs, and saved $250,000 through automation through its work with Arizona MEP.

Aerospace, aviation, and defense

  • Arizona aerospace and defense manufacturers rely on NIST reference materials for metals and rare earth elements, glass, cements, solders, elemental analysis and more to ensure the highest quality control for parts where failure would cause catastrophic losses.
  • NIST standards, calibrations and other services ensure accuracy in measurements of altitude and airspeed, and in remote sensing via satellites. The atomic clocks used by global positioning systems and telecommunications networks rely on precision timekeeping disseminated by NIST, starting with the NIST primary standard atomic clock.
  • NIST supports deployment of the fifth generation of wireless communications including providing world-class test beds for characterizing antennas for space applications. This research helps the industry make smaller antennas for smaller, less expensive satellites.

Biotechnology, life sciences and health care

  • NIST’s calibration laboratory for mammographic X-rays helps to ensure that patients receive the appropriate X-ray exposures, which means fewer repeat tests and lower radiation doses. NIST provides accurate references and a biennial proficiency testing program for mammography inspectors to ensure that they have the tools they need to support accurate diagnoses and minimize radiation exposure for everyone receiving a mammogram.
  • NIST reference materials help the biotechnology industry with quantitative analytical measurement tools for nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites and cell systems so that manufacturers can monitor and improve manufacturing methods and products — and innovate more quickly.
  • NIST’s guidance on temperature control for vaccine storage has reduced waste by 30%, so more doses are available for more people. Our calibration materials for magnetic resonance imaging help medical researchers develop quantitative tests that can rapidly determine if treatments for glioblastoma and other cancers are working, speeding clinical decisions.

Energy and climate

  • NIST calibrations help Arizona companies, research labs and testing labs accurately measure the output of their solar cells and modules. NIST standard reference materials allow for calibrations under different light conditions — from standard solar irradiance for space applications to indoor ambient light for energy harvesting — supporting a wide range of Arizona industries and residential users.

CHIPS Funding

Arizona State University

Award Amount
$100 million in direct funding
CHIPS Organization
CHIPS NAPMP
This award aims to support Arizona State University in developing the next generation of microelectronics packaging through fan-out-wafer-level processing and exploring the commercial vitality of 300mm wafer-level and 600mm panel-level manufacturing.

Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD)

Proposed Funding by Natcast
$1,785,785
MCCCD will use anticipated funding to expand its semiconductor technician training offerings and launch the Maricopa Accelerated Semiconductor Training (MAST) program, building on the success of the Quick Start program. As the largest workforce training provider in the state, MCCCD's expanded programming will prepare an additional 300 individuals for careers as semiconductor technicians in Arizona's booming semiconductor industry, addressing the region's growing demand for highly skilled workers and reinforcing Arizona's position as a global semiconductor leader.

Hydronalix Expands Product Line and Manufacturing by Growing Its Export Markets

Reported Year
2024
The first step Hydronalix took was to develop an export strategy and plan with the help of ExporTech™, a two-month export boot camp program led by Arizona MEP, part of the MEP National Network™. Since then, Hydronalix has consistently executed its export plan with help from the Arizona State Trade Expansion Program (AZSTEP) program, which assists

SmithCraft Signs Launches Continuous Improvement with Arizona MEP

Reported Year
2024
icole Bergstrom took over as President at SmithCraft a few years ago and while she was familiar with the business through a family connection, she did not come from a manufacturing background. When she joined the organization, she observed that mid-level management was frequently preoccupied with solving day-to-day production and customer issues
